"Ocean Yachts SOLD"

55' Ocean Yachts 1983

Summary

Fennders is a 1983 Ocean Yachts 55 Super Sport equally comfortable trolling with her outriggers or docked for cocktails. With her mid 20 knots cruising speed, she can easily get you to your favorite offshore fishing spots quickly and comfortably. Although fully outfitted and rigged for fishing, Fennders has been an excellent live-aboard vessel for the current owners, with her 3 stateroom and 3 head layout, and full-size galley refrigerator. The current owner, a very experienced boater, purchased Fennders in 2015 and spent multiple seasons in the Bahamas. Although she has been lightly fished, she is ready for family adventures or tournament fishing. Fennders is ready for her next owner and more adventures.

The Ocean Yachts 55 Super Sport combined the two essential components of any convertible fishing vessel - speed and beauty. There were 170 built over 10 years in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, making the 55 Super Sport the most popular Ocean Yachts model ever produced, and the best-selling convertible, that dominated the 1980's. Ocean Yachts began in 1977 by the Leek family whose boat building history went back to 1721. They were known to have a highly efficient production yard that built yachts with designer interiors and layouts that maximized the use of space, built with unmatched speed and efficiency.

1983 Ocean Yachts 55 SS Walk Through

As a "Jersey style" sport fishing boat, Fennders has no swim platform. She is boarded over the cockpit gunwales, which are unvarnished teak. There are integrated steps on either side for ease of boarding from the dock. Water access is provided by a Windline sport dive ladder.

The interior space on Fennders is entered through a single sliding door from the cockpit, two steps up. The L-shaped settee is to port, across from an upholstered chair.  The galley is forward of the salon, also to port, across from the dinette. Several steps down is the companionway to the staterooms. The ensuite VIP guest stateroom is to port. An ensuite over/under bunk room is to starboard, across from the guest stateroom. The ensuite master stateroom is forward with a walk-around queen berth.

1983 Ocean Yachts 55 SS Accommodations

Salon

The Fennders salon features an L-shaped blue fabric settee, with storage drawers under the aft section and open storage under the port side cushions. The salon table has fold down sides. It is large enough to use as a dining room table for four to six guests. An integrated end table and bookshelf complete the port side of the salon.

The electrical panel is in a cabinet to starboard just inside the door, with a large drawer above it. The entire starboard wall behind the free-standing upholstered chair is additional storage. A round occasional table is handy, and is built to not fall over even in rough seas.  Neutral wall-to-wall carpeting covers the salon and dinette sole. The sliding door to the cockpit has upper and lower glass panels with snap-on blue canvas privacy covers. Wood blinds cover all of the large windows, which were reset and resealed with Sikaflex (2018). The headliner is in good condition and features teak handholds. There is substantial headroom, and four electrical outlets throughout the salon. There are seven directional brass ceiling fixtures, which provide plenty of light. The deckhouse walls are all wood; a brass bell, a brass clock, and brass seabirds complete the décor.

Galley

The deckhouse galley on Fennders is forward of the salon to port, and is open enough to include the chef in the salon conversation. A neutral Formica counter with an electrical outlet and a hinged storage bin separate the salon and galley; there are LED lights over the counter.

The galley appliances include: a full size upright LG French door 22 cubic inch stainless steel refrigerator with a drawer freezer with ice maker (2016), a Kenmore dishwasher, a Black and Decker microwave oven (2020), a Princess three burner ceramic cooktop electric range and oven, a Black and Decker toaster oven, and a GE Compactall trash compactor. A deep single stainless steel sink with pull-out faucet and soap dispenser makes galley clean-up easy.

There is an abundance of storage including: a double door two shelf cabinet over the counter, a large cutlery drawer and large two shelf cabinet between the trash compactor and refrigerator, a double door cabinet over the refrigerator, rack storage on the far side of the refrigerator, storage under the oven and sink, four drawers, a built-in spice cabinet, and three cabinets with doors that slide up for stowage behind the range and sink, one of which hides the microwave oven. There are two additional outlets for small galley appliances, and additional LED lights to illuminate the work area. The sole is wood parquet.

Dinette

The dinette is across from the galley and features a blue fabric bench seat which coordinates with the salon settee, as well as two stools. There is enough room at the wood dinette table to seat four guests. A hinged wet bar to starboard between the dinette and salon features a liquor cabinet. The owner does not have water currently run to the wet bar sink. The U-line ice maker is used as a beverage cooler only.

A 40" TCL Roku TV is mounted in the dinette, and can easily be viewed from the salon. TV components are located in open cabinets behind the television, over the stairs leading forward.

Companionway

The staterooms on Fennders are forward several steps and down from the galley. All three staterooms open to the companionway. The companionway features textured "Seagrass" cloth wall coverings and a large mirrored bulkhead.

The GE washer is cleverly located in the stairs down from the galley. The GE dryer with a remote vent fan is in a cabinet to port in the companionway.

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is all the way forward, one step up. The queen sized walk-around berth is situated aft to forward and has a custom decorator padded headboard that matches the custom bedding. The sole carpeting matches the companionway and upper deckhouse.

There is abundant storage which includes: three large lighted hanging lockers with louvered doors, a large lighted locker with corner shelves with a louvered door, four under-berth drawers on the port side, two under-berth drawers on the starboard side, and three deep cabinets over a Formica counter with three drawers and a full length sliding door cabinet on either side of the berth.

The master stateroom on Fennders also has a brass swing arm reading lamp, a ceiling hatch, ample headroom, two deck prisms for natural light, and a Sharp TV (which is not hooked up to the television antenna) with a DVD player, and a mirrored wall and door leading forward into the ensuite head.

Master Stateroom Head

The master stateroom head on Fennders is ensuite and features: a Raritan Elegance electric head, a separate stall shower with a light and seat and glass door, two deep linen cabinets in the stall shower, neutral wall coverings, a molded vanity with sink and storage beneath, an electrical outlet, a wood parquet sole, mirrored storage over the vanity with lights, a ceiling hatch, mirrored storage on the wall behind the head, and brass wall mounted towel hooks. The anchor locker is also accessible from inside the stall shower.

VIP Guest Stateroom

One of the three staterooms on Fennders is the VIP guest stateroom, located aft of the master stateroom to port. It is accessible from the companionway. It features a full sized berth on the bulkhead with two reading lights. The wall coverings are textured grass cloth. Storage is available in four drawers under the berth, and in the lighted hanging locked with louvered door.  Long-term storage is also available in two storage boxes accessible by lifting the mattress.

The VIP guest stateroom also features a Formica counter with a large mirror and a drawer, a deck prism for natural light, an electrical outlet, and a brass "hatch" mirror. There is an ensuite head.

1983 Ocean Yachts 55 SS Hull and Running Gear

The bottom was totally stripped and sanded clean in the spring of 2016. It was then finished with West System epoxy, four coats of Interlux InterProtect paint, and two coats of bottom paint. The bottom was refinished with two coats of bottom paint in the fall of 2020.

The running gear was sanded and coated with multiple coats of Petit Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier in November, 2021. The through hulls were all exercised and the fittings were greased as needed at the same time, before the boat was launched in November, 2021.

1983 Ocean Yachts 55 SS Deck

The deck surface on Fennders is off-white non-skid. Hand rails over the windows aid in moving forward on the vessel. Storage boxes are across the deck in front of the deckhouse. These can also be used as seating; the cushions are currently in storage and are not shown in the photos.  Fender racks are mounted on the bow rail on both sides of the foredeck. The life raft box mounted at the bow pulpit is only used for storage. There are teak cap rails and trim, which were varnished afresh in fall of 2021.

The bow pulpit is teak. The anchor locker holds +/-200' of chain and +/-200' of rode. There are two Danforth 40# anchors. The Ideal windlass has foot controls.

The Boston Whaler tender is stored on the foredeck chocks, and is deployed using the Marquipt dinghy davit lift (110V) with wired controller.

1983 Ocean Yachts 55 SS Cockpit

The 130SF cockpit on Fennders has an oiled teak deck and unvarnished teak gunwales. It features: a sink and bait prep station with a cabinet with tackle drawers, access to the engine room, a top loading cooler box which cools to the mid 30 degrees but does not freeze, a ladder to the flybridge, a teak door into the deckhouse, and a docking station with a cabinet with tackle drawers. The cockpit deck has a Murray Brothers small tuna chair, a forward storage box with a lift-off lid, two aft storage boxes with lift-off lids which also provide rudder access, and a center aft container with lift-off lid.

The Glendenning 110V Cablemaster is located forward to starboard under the step, along with a 110V electrical outlet. The raw water wash-down is located aft to starboard. The fresh water hook up is located aft to port, along with a 12V electrical outlet for an electric reel. There is storage on both sides of the cockpit, with integral racks.

There are six rod holders in the teak gunwale, and two brass hawse pipes in the transom. Fennders also has spreader lights, two cockpit lights, and two speakers attached to the flybridge CD player in the cockpit.

Fennders has a three step 38" Windline dive ladder which mounts on the transom. There are two stainless steel handles on the inside of the tuna door, which aid in climbing out of the water and into the cockpit. The ladder can also mount on the Boston Whaler tender, which really aids in climbing back into the tender from the water. The ladder is stored in the port side cabinet in the cockpit.

1983 Ocean Yachts 55 SS Flybridge

Fennders is piloted from the flybridge helm station, which is reached via a ladder with tubular aluminum rails and natural teak steps. There are two cushioned pedestal chairs at the helm; the captain's chair has a foot rest. Guest seating is in front of the console on a settee with white vinyl cushions or on the two deck boxes behind the pedestal chairs which have matching white vinyl cushions.  A Midea stainless steel beverage refrigerator was installed in the console in 2018.

The flybridge is fully enclosed with cream colored Stamoid and Strataglass, which was new in 2015 and still looks good. The current owner puts Fennders in storage each summer, and stores the entire enclosure flat with towels between the layers for added protection. Some zippers have been replaced as needed.

Storage is available on the flybridge under all of the guest seating, and in the cabinets at the helm station. A chart table with teak trim is at the helm station. There is a hatch in the hardtop, and two smoked Plexiglas panels aft on the flybridge.
