TATOOSH is one of the most luxurious wooden yachts ever commissioned in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle’s Vic Franck Boatyard built TATOOSH in 1961 for the Boeing family.
Design-wise her pedigree is impeccable: hull of 2" edge-grain yellow cedar planking by Ben Seaborn (of the famous 26' Thunderbird class) and rigging by New York’s Sparkman & Stephens. Her dimensions are ample: 20' beam, 65 ton displacement, 5' freeboard, 8' draft plus another 3' with the centerboard lowered.
Below decks, the layout emphasizes space and comfort: a 20 x 20' main salon, three guest staterooms including two complete heads with hot showers and sinks, crew cabin and aft cabin. The galley, with two teak-edged built-in freezers and 4-burner stove makes provisioning and feeding guests and crew a snap, while also giving capability for a nonstop passage.

The forepeak area is forward with access to anchor windlass. Crew quarters are aft with two staggered berths fitted with foam cushions, a hanging locker and storage areas. A five-rung ladder leads to hatch on foredeck. Aft of this is the crew head and shower. Aft of the crew quarters is the galley and dining area. The dinette seats six people and features a hand-rubbed solid teak dining table. Aft of the galley is the engine room which is insulated with 1" thick fiber sound insulation, work bench and miscellaneous storage space.
Access to the main salon is from the gallery via a companionway and four-step stairway. The salon measures approximately 16' by 14' and is completely paneled with teak. The sole is varnished teak and holly. On the port side of the salon is a built-in settee and two chairs to starboard. The electronics area are to port. Four large windows give excellent visibility. To starboard are built-in cabinets. There is additional storage space throughout this area. Forward is a large navigation area with chart drawers. Two tables convert into dining for eight.
The living quarters are accessible from the aft end of the salon down two steps to a hallway which ends at the mater stateroom. The living quarters are all holly and paneled in hand rubbed teak.
The passageway has built-in linen cabinets and house the centerboard retracting mechanism. To port is a guest stateroom with one double and one single berth. Further aft to starboard is the second guest stateroom with one large double berth. One guest head and shower. The master stateroom is aft and has two large double berths and private head with shower. There is an escape hatch in the overhead with a built-in plexiglass skylight. At the aft bulkhead is a desk with bookcase. Two large hanging closets and numerous drawers complete the master stateroom.
Access from below deck to the cockpit area is via a 4-step stairway from the aftermost end of the salon. The cockpit is located on top of the trunk cabin and has teak decking. There are contoured seats on each side capable of seating twelve to fifteen people and a center steering console. The steering console has a 36" spoked teak wheel, rimmed with brass and topped with compass in binnacle.
