Every year since 1945 some of the best sailors from around the world meet up with yacht enthusiasts to try their hand at the Sydney to Hobart sail yacht race. Hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia the race starts in Sydney, Australia on Boxing Day and finishes up approximately 630 nautical miles south at Hobart, Tasmania. Run in co-operation with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, this race is considered to be one of the most difficult yacht races in the world. Originally the race was planned to be a simple cruise by a gentleman named Peter Luke who had formed a club for those who enjoy simple cruising versus racing, but a British Royal Navy officer named Captain Illingworth came across the plans and suggested it become a race. And as simple as that, the event was born.
This year a seasoned racer will return to the race; Olympic swim star Geoff Huegill. Huegill will be aboard the 100 foot supermaxi “Ragamuffin Loyal” for his second race south which begins this year on December 26th (sailboats for sale). He will be under the command of the oldest skipper in the race, 85-year-old sailing legend Syd Fischer. When asked about his preparedness for the race Huegill said his daugter has been helping him train: “Sleep deprivation, it was the hardest thing last time,” said Huegill, aboard the Sydney to Hobart racer to help raise money for the Loyal Foundation charity. “But I’ve got a 10-month-old baby now. Sleep deprivation is something I am well and truly used to.”
