Survey and Sea Trial Procedures for Yacht

yacht survey sea trialThe survey & sea trial of your yacht can be the most stressful and important aspect in making the sale go through smoothly. Based on our years of success in the yachting industry, and having performed thousands of sea trials over our history, here is a description of a basic yacht sale deal:

After an offer is presented and accepted, the next step of acceptance of the yacht is usually based on a “survey and sea trial acceptable to the buyer.” Although some deals are “as is where is,” which has advantages in certain situations and negotiations, when the sale is contingent on a survey and sea trial the buyer will bring in a hull surveyor and an engine surveyor to go for a boat ride. Typically on this sea trial you will find the current captain and crew of the vessel, along with the selling broker, the buying broker, and his buyer. Many sellers ask if it is appropriate for them to also be present on the sea trial. However, it is usually recommended that he let the aforementioned group go on their own because there is a better, less emotional, dynamic in that case. They then run the boat to a haul out location and lift the boat from the water for an exterior hull inspection. The hull surveyor documents most aspects of the craft and make sure that all the systems are functional along with documenting general engine and generator functionality. The engine surveyor will collection oil samples, perform a mechanical inspection of the engines, and hook up a computer to thoroughly test their performance. Once these reports are received by the buyer’s party they then have the information necessary to either accept or reject the vessel and move on to closing. Be sure to line up dockage, insurance and delivery to make sure there are no hiccups. And that’s it! You have your new boat!
