Sunseeker Yachts History

Sunseeker Yachts History

If not for the daring career gamble of Robert Braithwaite, a young boat salesman in Britain, one of Sunseeker Yachts Historythe world’s leading luxury motoryacht builders, Sunseeker Yachts, would never have existed. Thanks to Braithwaite’s determination, Sunseeker Yachts has risen from humble beginnings to become a global powerhouse, consistently developing innovative technologies to produce a collection of Sports Cruisers, Performance Motor yachts, Flybridge Motor yachts, and Megayachts that deliver sumptuous luxury whilst retaining superior speed and maneuverability. Sunseeker’s innovations have brought it to the forefront of yacht design, with a pattern of excellence that continues today at their expansive Technology Center, which combines state-of-the-art manufacturing processes with handcrafted workmanship to produce exceptional vessels continually in demand in more than 60 countries around the world.

In 1969, Robert Braithwaite was working at modestly sized British firm Poole Powerboats, selling dinghies and outboards imported from Scandinavia and America. When one of the brands Poole represented, American boat builder Owens, announced they were shutting down their UK operations, Braithwaite boldly seized the opportunity. He raised the necessary funds to purchase Owens’ boat mould, negotiated the purchase, and Poole Powerboats entered the boat building business. By the early 1970s, the company was exhibiting their first 17 and 23 footers, taking their initial step toward becoming the iconic company they are today.

The first boat to carry the name Sunseeker was built in the mid-1970’s, and in 1979, the company forged one of the great partnerships of the yachting industry by collaborating with Master Designer Don Shead to develop the race-derived deep-V hulls that have become a Sunseeker trademark. This partnership has persisted through the years; the integration of Shead’s designers and engineers with Sunseeker’s boat builders has allowed Sunseeker to develop its astonishingly broad array of vessels. During the 1980’s, with their iconic Sunseeker line garnering widespread notice, Poole Powerboats officially made the switch and changed their name to Sunseeker International Yachts.

Few manufacturers have pioneered as many drive and propulsion systems in leisure craft as Sunseeker. The many innovations throughout Sunseeker Yachts’ history include Duoprops, stern-driven race-bred Arneson surface drives, and the first production boat to be powered by water jets. Sunseeker’s core conviction that yachts must deliver an experience rich in enjoyment led to their introducing the first family-size cruiser to offer an integral garage for tenders and toys, a feature now standard in the modern motoryacht. The expansive range of Sunseeker yachts extends from speedy 34′ Sportfishers to their latest and largest craft, a stunning tri-deck 155 Megayacht currently in build.
