Lurssen Yachts’ History

Lurssen Yachts, the German shipbuilding company widely recognized as one of the world’s Lurssen Yachts leading builders of custom superyachts, has a well-established tradition of introducing industry-changing firsts and bests to the boating world. Over the 187 years of Lurssen Yachts’ history, the family-owned company has shaped the yachting industry, consistently maintaining its position at the forefront of the boatbuilding world by introducing cutting-edge innovations and advanced technologies created by its dedicated workforce of naval architects and engineers. From the production of the world’s first motorboat in 1886 to the launch of M/Y Azzam, which in 2012 was the world’s largest superyacht, Lurssen Yachts has set the standard for boatbuilding excellence, blazing a trail for other yacht companies to follow.

In 1875 Friedrich Lurssen founded Lurssen boatyard, quickly gaining a reputation for building exceptionally fast and light racing rowboats. Eleven years later in 1886 inventor Gottlieb Daimler commissioned Lurssen to design and build a boat for his new engine, leading to the creation of the first ever motorboat and launching a new industry. Lurssen stepped into the limelight again in 1911 with the collaborative Lurssen-Daimler speedboat, which won the unofficial Monaco world championship, the Prix de la Cote d’Azur, and the Grand Prix des Nations. The string of Lurssen’s accomplishments continued, with Lurssen Yachts building the world’s fastest commuter yacht in 1927, and setting the world speed record in 1939. Lurssen continues its tradition of firsts to the current day, setting a world’s largest yacht record in 2012.

During its entire 187-year history, Lurssen has remained a family-owned company. With more than 3000 vessels to their credit, Lurssen Yachts has forged a reputation for building exceptional yachts that live up to the highest technical standards. The shipyard has expanded several times since its inception and is currently divided into three business fields to meet all the needs of its clients. The first section is reserved for the building of naval vessels and special ships; the second is for the building of luxury superyachts 40 to 150+ meters in length, and the final section, Lurssen Logistic, focusing on yacht management, repair and maintenance, spare part documentation, and crew training.
