Long Beach Yacht Club Hosts Southern California Yachting Association’s 81st Midwinter Regatta

This article was published on: February 24, 2010

Out of over 30 yacht clubs on the West coast, Long Beach Yacht Club hosted the Southern California Yachting Association’s 81st Midwinter Regatta. A longstanding tradition kicking off the Southern California racing season, the Midwinter Regatta began in 1928 and has since developed into the United States’ largest regatta event, with over 600 vessels and 80 classes registering, including cruisers, Performance Handicap Racing Fleet, dinghies, multihull, canoes and model sailboats.  Both days of the regatta, crews faced steady winds at 15-20 knots, creating choppy seas to challenge the sailors. Participants came from yacht clubs all over– San Diego, the Pacific Coast, Arizona and the Channel Islands. A few injuries were incurred from the rough seas, including a crewman aboard the White Knight, Zoltan Katinszky’s Farr 40 vessel.  He lost his footing down below while stowing the spinnaker and had a severe head injury.  The White Knight immediately pulled out of the race and he was brought to a local hospital. The Farr 40 fleet winner was the Dark Star, Jeff Janov’s vessel from the Cal Yacht Club.  This yacht ended Saturday four points ahead of Piranha, David Voss’ boat.  Voss trailed behind Janov the entire day on Sunday and Janov kept the four points for the win.
