KWFT

The Key West Fishing Tournament was founded in 1965 by Gainey Maxwell, a charter boat captain. Key West residents and non residents come from all over to partake in this fishing tournament. It is an 8-month long competition open to the public. You may fish by boat, land or bridge. Visiting and resident anglers weigh and release catches in order to compete for awards. Entries receive certificates noting their catch.

There are four angler divisions, Men, Women, Junior (age 10-15) and Peewee (under 10). Anglers in each division win an award for the heaviest of 33 species in 9 different line classes. A ‘Master Angler’ title is given to both in-county and out-of-county residents in all four divisions. Check out the 2017 ‘Master Angler’ awards here. Equally important, there are efforts to promote conservation and the release of fish with established minimum weights in each line class to discourage the killing of smaller fish. There are also minimum lengths for some species for release citations.
