One of the best parts of the Florida yachting scene is the proximity of the Bahamas. Continue east and you’ll travel south of Nassau and eventually you will hit a chain of islands called Exuma. The Exuma cays are a chain of 365 cays that is a part of the Bahamas’ archipelago that is famous among divers, fishermen, and snorkelers for beautifully clear aquamarine water. Many travelers from around the world who have cruised through this 120-mile-long strip have declared it is an experience that they will never forget.
The cays range from rock clusters with a patchwork of bushes, to patches of paradise with a few coconut palm trees on them, some are uninhabited desert islands, while others are decorated with palatial beachfront homes. There is one particular island, Big Major Cay, where when you are sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you may be visited by some unexpected friends: pigs. But, similar to the island residents, these pigs do not just stay on land. They enjoy the beautiful clear waters and often swim out to meet their visitors upon arrival. Dive in with some hot dogs (turkey, of course) and they will be your best friends. Stories vary as to how they got there but I’m sure that many of the world’s pigs would be very envious of their lifestyle.
