America’s Cup Trophy Returns to United States Shores

America’s Cup Trophy Returns to United States Shores

In America’s territory for the first time since 1995, the oldest trophy in international sports is en route from Valencia, Spain to San Francisco, California after The BMW Oracle won the America’s Cup yacht races.

Celebrations will occur at the Golden Gate Yacht Club, welcoming members and their guests to meet and greet the crew of the BMW Oracle.  The cup will be on display for public viewing at the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The trimarin conquered the race against defending Swiss team aboard the Alinghi.  The America’s Cup trophy is 159 years old and will remain on display at the San Diago Yacht Club aboard the schooner America, the namesake of the trophy.  From 1987 until 1995, America and the San Diego Yacht Club housed the trophy until New Zealand won the 1995 races.

Possibly extending the homecoming tour, America’s cup may visit the East Coast in the following week.  The America’s Cup trophy was housed in the New York Yacht Club for 132 years.
