Yachting Safety Tips

Yacht Safety The fall holiday season is almost here, affording you the perfect opportunity to get out on the water and indulge in your favorite pastime. Whether you are looking forward to a lazy time spent relaxing on board your yacht with family and friends or are eagerly anticipating an epic battle reeling in the perfect catch, the best way to enjoy a carefree holiday is by ensuring everyone onboard your vessel follows these basic yachting safety tips: Carefully Inspect Your Yacht Before setting out, make sure your vessel is in good working order. Check that all needed safety supplies, such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and medical supplies are on board, test  running and anchor lights, and top off your fuel tanks. Atlantic Yacht & Ship’s in-house waterside service department will be glad to service your vessel and make any needed repairs. Establish On-Board Rules Before You Set Out Passengers on board your yacht will be focused on enjoying themselves – it is too late to try to lay out rules once you are already underway. Familiarize your guests with basic safety rules before you head out, and make certain everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. Inform your passengers that they should bring any medications they might need with them (such as insulin or heart medication). Insist that Everyone Wear a Life Jacket Nobody enjoys donning a life jacket, and it can be tempting to leave it off, especially when in familiar waters. Boating accident occur instantaneously, though, leaving no time to scramble into a life vest so it is imperative that everyone, especially young passengers, keep their life jackets on at all times. Leave the Alcohol on Shore Alcohol use was the leading factor in all boating fatalities again last year, contributing to 17 percent of recreational boating deaths in this country. Operating your yacht when alcohol has impaired your judgment and diminished your decision-making skills poses an unacceptable risk to  the safety of everyone on board and all the vessels in the surrounding waters. Check the Weather Even if you only intend to go out for a short cruise, be sure to check the forecast before making your plans. Keep an eye on the weather throughout your excursion; and watch for  early warning of any  inclement conditions. File a Trip Plan Someone on shore needs to know your intended itinerary; where you are going, when you plan to return, and who will be accompanying you. Leave instructions on whom to notify and what to do if you do not return within a reasonable amount of time. Stay in Control of Your Vessel Passengers may badger you for a chance at the controls, but it is easy for an inexperienced newcomer to lose focus and run your yacht into trouble. Lack of experience,  operator inattention, and excess speed contribute to the majority of the reported boating accidents each year. Keep control and operate your yacht at a safe and appropriate speed to ensure your holiday outing is a safe and enjoyable one for all.
