World’s Largest Yacht

At a stunning 590-feet long, Superyacht Azzam has captured the title of world’s largest superyacht from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s Eclipse. Built at the staggering cost of a $605 million, the mammoth superyacht was officially unveiled in April and has recently been spotted being tested in the North Sea. Experts claim that she reached a top speed of 31.5 knots during her trials, making her also the fastest superyacht in the world.

At 590ft, Azzam is 57 feet longer than Abramovich’s superyacht Eclipse. To put Azzam’s sheer immensity in perspective, she is larger than the US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, more than one and a half football fields in length, with more room than many commercial cruise ships can claim. One of the original specifications was the ability to travel at high speed in shallow waters, which Azzam ably achieves thanks to a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines that give her a total of 94,000 horsepower.

Engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi directed the construction of the megayacht, assembling a stellar team to accomplish the task. German shipbuilding company Lürssen Yachts, one of the world’s leading builders of custom superyachts, was in charge of Azzam’s engineering, Italian firm Nauta Yachts contributed the elegant design and exterior styling of Azzam, and renowned French designer Christophe Leoni was responsible for interior design. Azzam set records for her unprecedentedly short build time of a mere three years of construction after an initial year of engineering.

Rumors abound about the identity of her owner, with some speculating she belongs to a powerful Middle Eastern billionaire. Little is known about the interior of Azzam, and given the reticence of her owner, it remains unlikely that the public will ever get a peek at her interior glory. Experts suggest that it could rival the opulence of Abramovich’s Eclipse, which features dual swimming pools and helipads, a cinema, disco hall, and an armor-plated master suite with bullet-proof glass. Abramovich’s vessel even has a mini-submarine capable of 150-ft dives and its own missile defense system. The mystery owner is expected to take delivery later this year.
