Hatteras is a long-time leader in the design, engineering and construction of quality motor yachts and convertibles, having begun operations at Cape Hattera in 1960. Hatteras began with the Hargrave-designed Hatteras 41 Convertible, Knit Wits, which was the first all-fiberglass sport fishing boat her size in the industry. Additional designs quickly followed, and by the late 1960s, Hatteras was able to offer a full line of models including the largest production fiberglass motor yacht then available, the Hatteras 50 MY. In 1967, Hatteras expanded operations to New Bern, North Carolina and eventually moved all operations to this 96-acre waterfront location.
Since its beginnings, Hatteras has been the undisputed leader of production convertibles and motor yachts in the industry because of its attention to detail and its aspirations of continuous improvement. The experienced and expert naval architects and engineers at Hatteras know that traditional deep V-designed hulls have a higher tendency to roll and incur high hull resistance. Flat-bottom hulls offer less resistance but pound in normal sea conditions. Therefore, Hatteras has developed a series of convex and modified V-hulls that provide the best of both designs. Hatteras hulls deliver a sharp entry and a soft, stable glide – a smooth comfort that makes up the essence of the legendary “Hatteras ride”.
When the market began to demand bigger boats, Hatteras delivered, expanding the Hatteras sport fishing fleet from 50′ boats to 101′ convertibles. Hatteras then began designing and producing a line of cruising yachts that range from 56 to 105 feet in length.
The renowned line of Hatteras Yachts all came from Willis Slane’s resolution to build a fiberglass yacht tough enough to tackle any storm and large enough for a fishing crew or small family. With that in mind, Hatteras places a great amount of importance on the durability of the vessels they produce. It is no wonder, then, that their yachts age extremely well and maintain their quality for years. In fact, the first boat ever built by Hatteras, the 41′ Convertible, Knit Wits, is still in service today after her substantial fishing career.
