The former presidential yacht, Honey Fitz, is undergoing restoration in Riviera Beach, Florida. Built in 1931, the Honey Fitz has seen a lot of history and has served five American presidents! The 93-foot yacht has been called a characteristically American yacht for its ability to travel extended distances at a quick pace.
After World War II, President Harry Truman and subsequent presidents used the ship for transport until Richard Nixon decided it was an extravagance and put it up for sale in 1970. It was President John F. Kennedy who made the ship famous, naming it after his grandfather John F. Fitzgerald aka “Honey Fitz”. The Kennedy family has spent vacations basking on the deck of the Honey Fitz.
In 1998, Honey Fitz was sold at auction for $5.9 million to businessman William Kallop, who keeps the boat docked in Florida. The underside of the yacht is in poor condition and needs serious repairing. Honey Fitz is not only getting that section of her hull fixed but is undergoing a full scale restoration to her glory days as a presidential vessel. Fortunately, the original blueprints for the ship were found so she will stay true to her former design.
