Benetti Yachts History

Benetti Yachts HistoryOne of the oldest builders of luxury motoryachts in the world, Italian ship building company Benetti has been delivering world-class yachts since 1873. Now celebrating its 140th year in business, the esteemed company has taken the experience and skill it acquired as a traditional shipyard and blended it with state of the art technology and innovation to become one of the world’s leading yacht builders. A recent merger with Azimut formed the company into the Azimut-Benetti group, which for the past six years has been the largest superyacht manufacturer in the world, in terms of production.

Shipyard worker Lorenzo Benetti established the company in 1873 in Darseno, Italy as a shipyard building wooden boats for local and international trade. He directed the company for the next forty years, with help from his two sons. After Lorenzo’s death, the brothers renamed the shipyard Fratelli Benetti, quickly building a reputation that extended beyond the Mediterranean. Over time, commercial sailing vessels built from wood were gradually phased out, and in 1941 the Benetti shipyard pioneered the first steel hulled, diesel vessel. They followed this launch by turning to full production of steel pleasure craft.

In 1963, with the passing of ownership of the shipyard to a new generation, Benetti began to produce its first luxury mega yachts. Benetti shipyard began building sailing and motor yachts in the late 1970s, making the Benetti name a legend throughout the yachting world. Since 1980, the Benetti fleet has included luxury yachts in the 30 to 60 meter range, including 86-meter ‘Nabila’, the most famous yacht of her time. In 1985, after the Benetti shipyard faced some financial difficulties, they were purchased by celebrated Turin-based boat builder Azimut Spa who appointed new management.

Azimut’s strengths lay in their exceptional planning and management abilities, a keen understanding of the international yacht market, and finely-tuned cost/ time control mechanisms. Benetti shipyard flourished with the influx of the new abilities, transforming into an innovative, technologically advanced boatyard that still manages to stay true to its founding principles of dedication and exceptional craftsmanship.
