Team Oracle, representing the United States of America, has triumphed and managed to win the 2013 America’s Cup despite having been significantly behind just one week ago. The team has achieved the last eight consecutive races allowing it to go from eight spots behind to the tournament’s champion. Crowds along the San Francisco Bay gathered to spectate the event with the historic and famous Alcatraz prison as a backdrop. This 34th running of the America’s cup is particularly exciting due to the high tech sailing boats that these teams are implementing. These yachts are hitting record breaking speeds for sailing boats which can hit speeds above 40 knots and are able to travel faster than the wind that is blowing them!
These impressive water crafts are state of the art with features and designs that make for ground breaking results. They are so intensely different than conventional sailing boats that a special rule was put in place this year to govern the construction and operation of these vessels for the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and the America’s Cup alike. One change is the lack of a traditional main sail. These boats are “winged” sailboats meaning that where a tradition sail would be there is the equivilant of a giant aircraft wing sticking vertically from the boat. Another development is the development of foils that lift the hull out of the water which enables the extreme speeds that these boats are able to hit!
